FARGO — The Fargo Park District is looking to do major repair work on the roof of the Metro Recreation Center at 3110 Main Ave. after windstorms earlier this year caused parts of the roof to peel away.
At a recent meeting, the Park District’s Facilities Committee voted to recommend that the full Park Board approve Fargo Roofing & Siding Co. to do the work, predicated on a base bid of about $898,00, plus the cost of a payment and performance bond of about $45,000, for a total cost of about $943,000.
Additional expenses could be incurred if deteriorated wood has to be replaced.
If Fargo Roofing & Siding’s bid is accepted by the Park District, repairs could be completed this fall, Park District officials said.
A windstorm in May and another storm in June caused roofing material to become detached from the structure. Interim repairs have been made, but a comprehensive overhaul of the roof is needed to protect the structure from the elements this winter, officials said.
The building, known as the Metro Rec Center, has operated as a recreation center since late 1987, according to a story in The Forum’s archives.
According to the story, before it became the Metro Rec Center, the structure was home to a farm equipment manufacturing plant.
Although the building currently has an indoor playing field, that part of the Metro Rec Center’s function is expected to go away once a new activities complex that is under construction is completed in early 2024, Park District officials said.
After the new indoor playing field is in operation, the Metro Rec Center will likely be used as a storage warehouse, officials said.
