The My Safe Florida Home Progam (MSFH)
The My Safe Florida Home program was launched by the Florida legislature in 2022. It provides single-family homeowners with a free Wind Mitigation Home Inspection and a Wind Mitigation Grant to address any issues discovered during the inspection.
With this program, Weston residents can work with approved contractors like Chase Roofing to fortify their homes to withstand hurricanes and other high-wind events via construction methods, designs, and materials. You can also reduce your insurance premiums by participating in this program.
Home-hardening projects have also been excluded from taxation by the legislature. Until June 30, 2024, purchases of impact-resistant doors, impact-resistant windows, and impact-resistant garage doors are exempt from sales tax (6%).
The Florida Department of Financial Services expects to conduct between 140,000 and 145,000 initial Wind Mitigation Inspections for qualified homeowners. The inspections will help determine the level of protection needed for each home and the amount of grant money needed for home-hardening projects.
The DFS anticipates giving between 11,000 and 12,000 Wind Mitigation Grants to fund any of the following projects:
-
Upgrades to Roof Coverings
-
Improvements to the Strength of Roof Deck Attachments
-
Roof-to-Wall Connections Reinforcements
-
Installations for Secondary Water Barriers for Roofs
-
Exterior Door Upgrades
-
Garage Door Upgrades
-
Window Upgrades
Each $1 approved homeowners spend on mitigation upgrades will result in a $2 grant, up to a maximum of $10,000, provided the repair work is completed by an authorized contractor. However, homeowners must invest $5,000 in hurricane mitigation measures to receive the full grant.
