The Woodland Reveille Lions Club has donated over $13,000 to repair the 60-year-old roof on the kitchen and clubhouse of Esparto’s Western Yolo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7143.
According to a local news release, the roof of the veterans’ building located at 16812 Orleans St. in Esparto started leaking badly and needed a complete strip to the base tongue and grove roofing that was installed in the ’60s.
It was a large repair project. After removing the roof’s high leakage areas, a large amount of fungus dry rot was found. Members of the Post replaced the rotted areas with an additional $1000 worth of new roofing lumber donated by Larry Miller and family, the owners of Woodland’s Yolo Lumber Company. Once the rotted lumber areas were repaired, Woodland’s Valley Roofing was contracted to finish removing three remaining layers of roofing that that been in place for decades and installed a new roofing and a gutter system to protect the building against future leaks.
“This was a huge donation for us,” Post Commander Charlie Schaupp stated. “Our roof was in very bad shape, and the leaks were destroying the interior. These donations by Woodland’s Reveille Lions Club and Yolo Lumber mean more to us than words can describe”.
The new roof also included the addition of two inches of roofing foam insulation covered by OSB plywood that not only will now stop the leaks but provide energy insulation savings for decades into the future.
“This donation is really wonderful,” stated Schaupp. “Our Post Hall was built by veterans who had served in World War II. They built the main hall in 1950, making the concrete bricks themselves on donated land from members of the community. This roofing repair covers the 1960s addition to the building over the kitchen and club membership rooms.”
“Our post now is mostly Vietnam Era Veterans and newer Global War on Terrorism Veterans,” Schaupp continued. “This donation means a lot to us, especially to our older members that are now physically challenged and can’t do this type of labor anymore. As the Post Commander and as a retired Marine, I want to send a huge “Semper Fi” (Always Faithful) to both the Reveille Lions and the Miller family for stepping up to help us with their fantastic generosity.”
