Downtown Miami’s 17-story Freedom Tower is set for a rehabilitation & repair project, according to documents newly filed with DERM.
The building closed in May to allow for the $25M state-funded renovation, according to Miami Today.
Funding for the project was placed in Florida’s 2022 budget after an announcement by the governor.
The DERM plan set is for a storm drainage well planned for the site, but also includes a description explaining the general scope of work for the overall project.
Rehabilitation and repairs of the building envelope will include concrete and steel maintenance and repairs, repair of steel lintels at existing openings, masonry maintenance and repairs, cement plaster (stucco) maintenance and repairs, replacement of joint sealants, flashing, copper roofing maintenance and repairs, exterior wall reinforcement at new louvers, repainting and related work.
Reopening of the tower is planned for 2025 – exactly 100 years after the tower was completed in 1925.
MCHarry Associates is overseeing the project with R.J. Heisenbottle Architects as the historic preservation architect for the project, according to the DERM filing. Miami-Dade College is the owner.
