LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Arkansas Community Foundation (ACF) recently awarded $1.2 million in grant funding to 42 non-profit organizations to help residents impacted by the March 31st tornado.
ACF said the grants ranged from $5,000-$75,000 and were split between Pulaski, Lonoke counties, and Wynne.
Heather Jenkins, public information officer with the city of Sherwood, said they received $25,000.
“We realize that a lot of our residents did everything right, they applied through their insurance, they applied for FEMA assistance, they applied through the SBA and through Red Cross,” Jenkins said. “However they either did not receive any assistance, or they didn’t receive enough based on what the estimates are required to repair their dwellings or their property.”
Jenkins said they posted the application on their website two weeks ago, but as of Thursday had only received one application.
“We understand that the process is ongoing and if there’s anything we can do, we encourage you to reach out and apply for this grant money because we have it,” Jenkins said.
Lynn Hawkins, a Sherwood resident, said her family worked hard to get damages to their home repaired.
“It’s been months trying to get the roof taken care of and then the sheetrock guys in and the floor and everything,” Hawkins said. “We still have a garbage can on our roof because not been replaced by our roofers.”
Hawkins said they finished most of their repairs last week but were just hit with a curve ball.
“We just found out our insurance has filed bankruptcy,” Hawkins said. “Apparently the roofers are owed $16,000 and they’re asking it of us and we don’t have it.”
Hawkins said she and her family would try to figure out the next steps and look to apply for the grant through the city of Sherwood.
