TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – On Monday, roofing repair companies across East Texas were busy responding to hail damage calls. The hail storms and severe weather that swept the region left behind dented cars, broken lights and damaged roofs, and experts have advised people to think about calling an expert before inspecting the roof themselves.
“Filing a claim is nothing that you should take lightly,” said Josiah Rosebury, owner of Yosemite Roofing in Tyler. “Before you do that, your roofing contractor should be able to get on your roof, scale it, tell you what type of damage is up there, be able to show you legitimate damage and then be able to walk you through that process, as well.”
Even before you call the experts there are some signs to look out for that do not involve scaling the roof.
“If you have an enormous amount of granulation on your ground, coming out through your gutters, that could be a tell-tale sign. Also, I would check my gutter downspouts to see if there’s any type of dents in those,” said Rosebury.
Experts at Stonewater Roofing were receiving calls as early as 5 a.m. Sunday. Chief Operating Officer Jacob Law said it is better to call a professional sooner rather than later.
“Hail itself, the damage caused yesterday morning may not cause a leak today, tomorrow or even in the next six months, but as time goes on, weather hits that roof – hot, cold, rain, hot, cold, rain – those granules are gone from that hail that hit yesterday, so it starts to wear away, and then you may have an issue,” he said.
In addition to knowing how to be safe on a roof, expert Phillip Goodwin said they have trained eyes.
“We’re trained to know what storm damage looks like,” he said. “There are times when it’s not storm damage, it’s heat related issues, it could be, you know, someone came up and put a satellite dish on [the roof] and did some damage to your roof.”
