Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WLFI) — With the up and down weather we’ve been experiencing this winter, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is warning Hoosiers to stay alert for winter scams as our homes might need weather-related repairs.
Here are some tips to prepare for winter weather emergencies while also avoiding home repair fraudsters:
- Ask friends, family, and co-workers for contractors with a good reputation.
- Get multiple bids from local contractors in writing.
- Avoid contractors who show up at your door and offer a “bargain” price for painting, driveway sealing, roof repairs, etc.
- Never pay for the project before work begins.
- Don’t make your final payment to the contractor until you’re sure the material suppliers and subcontractors have been paid.
- Search for the company’s name with words such as “scam” or “complaint.”
- Never rely on verbal or handshake deals. If you sign a contract, make sure all promises are in writing and that you understand what you’re signing.
