370 skilled tradesmen volunteered their time to repair the homes of the elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners in South Bend.
This is all part of the rebuilding together program, where the volunteers repair roofs, replace water heaters, do plumbing and electrical work at no cost to the homeowner.
“I just I can’t do the things I used to do because of my health. Because if my health was good. I would be up there with them,” Said Sherry Deleu-Bunch.
Sherry Deleu-Bunch was a member of the community getting her home repaired and said she is amazed that the community has supported her after the recent deaths of family members.
“I’ve lost my mother in law, my father and then I just lost my husband. And it’s just hard for me to do upkeep and all these wonderful people have come together to help with my own repairs,” Sherry said.
Sherry says that this work helps her stay in the home she has spent years in, saying the neighborhood she lives in means the world to her.
“I am very, very proud and happy for this community, the neighborhood. There’s a bunch of wonderful people that live in this area, and I got lucky,” Sherry said.
The next round of homes to get repaired will be on Community Volunteer day, April 27th.
